GBSF Assaut League 2006 - Event 1

Cambridge, Sunday 19th March.

A great event with some 9 hours of exciting fights saw competitors from across the UK and from France face each other in the ring across 3 x 1.5 minute rounds apiece.

After some testing travel arrangements, the London fighters arrived on time and, for the most part, weighed-in with few surprises. By the end of the day, smiles and medals adorned most of the returning fighters as, experienced and otherwise, they put on a fantastic display.

Of the 14 contested weight categories, fighters from the London camp took 6 gold medals, plus two second places and one third place.

The report for London fighters is as follows:

Fighter Category Ranking Comments
Leona F -48kg First place displayed great composure and technique to record a victory in her first competition.
Rachel F 60-65kg First place a superb range of kicks won Rachel first place.
Sophie F 65-70kg Second place one of the closest finals of the day saw Sophie narrowly lose out, but not for want of pressure, accuracy or speed.
Lizzy F 76kg+ First place a superb use of pressure and technical fighting gave Lizzy the win to take gold.
Nabil M 60-65kg First place some poetic fighting from our French entry saw off all his opponents.
Dom M 60-65kg Second place an unfavourable draw meant our fighter had to battle his way to second place with a skillful display.
Mike M 60-65kg Third place presented an excellent fight against all comers (even those that didn't show up). Great composure and technique.
Elliott M 70-76kg Top 7 finish bravely fought the eventual runner-up in his first competition. Impressive tenacity and range of strikes used against a larger and more experienced opponent.
James M 76-82kg First place used his hands for the first time in 5 years of competition. Seemed to work.
Pete M 82-89kg First place bringing together long and short range mastery, Pete progressed past his opponents in style.

"French Boxing is a deep science that requires a lot of composure, calculation, agility and strength. It is the nicest way to develop human strength, a fight with no other weapons than natural weapons where you cannot be taken by surprise."
